Predictable Factors of Depression among the Elderly in a Province Region

Abstract
Background : It was well known that depression increase in the elderly. This investigation was designed to investigate prevalence and predictable factors of depression among the elderly in a Province Region using Korean Form of Geriatric Depression Scale(KGDS-SF).

Methods : The study sample was 440 subjects over 60-year old who were living at home. The data were collected between October l and November 30. 2004 using a structured questionnaire for face to face interviews. Data was analysed by the program, SPSS WIN(ver. 10.1).

Results : The result showed that prevalence of depression was 52% and mean score of depression was 6.41(¡¾ 3.92) in total 440 subjects. Predictable factors associated with depression of the elderly were subjective health perception, living expense, relative health perception, spouse, housing, daily medication. exercise and religion. Subjective health perception was the most predictable variable of depression.

Conclusion : Based on the above results, we are able to decrease depression of the elderly by developing the effective health and social well fare supporting program for the community resident elderly. Further study is required to know other factors influencing on depression of the elderly.
